For a truck camper, the Host bathroom is pretty spacious. You can even have one person showering while someone else is getting items from the medicine cabinet (or possibly doing something more nefarious than that!). The medicine cabinet is large and the storage under the sink is like a small abyss (I have yet to figure out a way to organize that beyond grouping items in gallon ziplocks and gently shoving in until I have everything in there).
But there are definitely opportunities to make the cabinet and shower more user-friendly.
I put together a video of a lot of our organization tools, and walked through some of the items that are on the list below.
The below links are mostly Amazon Affiliate links to products I’ve purchased and am using in our truck camper. Feel free to peruse – hopefully some of these items will make sense for your rig (or future rig) as well!
Quick-Dry Towels (set of 2) – We tried microfiber and Turkish towels. Meh. These absorb water well but are not as soft as what we used in our home. That being said, we’ve grown to enjoy the light exfoliation while drying. AND these dry QUICKLY, which is essential.
Midea Dehumidifier – We were looking for a dehumidifer that would be big enough to make a difference and small enough not take up so much space that you feel you’re moving it EVERY. SINGLE. MINUTE. This is a great compromise. When it’s working it’s large (13.5″x 13.5″ x 26″), but when you’re ready to stow it, it’s like nesting dolls – pretty sweet. And BOY does it suck out humidity. Really happy with this unit so far! We store this in our shower when not in use.
Black RV Rods – I was so thrilled when I saw these black ones (i bought the standard white ones for our kitchen already). We only have them in our bathroom now, but will replace when the other white ones break. Works better with the Host colors than white.
Hand Towels (set of 4) – Really like these for the bathroom hand towels. They are larger than your typical hand towel and dry quickly. And with this pack, you can replace regularly and still have more than enough between laundry every 2 weeks. Oh, we do not recommend this type of towel for showers, though.
Shower Soap Holder – Man, I wish I had these in my sticks and bricks – this is FANTASTIC. Keeps your soap bars from getting all soft and actually helps the bar last longer! I also moved to shampoo bars so we have 2 of these!
Laundry Basket – These. Are. Amazing. We’ve practically had a body’s worth of clothes in this thing and it takes it. Honestly, I could barely lift it and no issues. It holds between 3-4 loads of laundry for us so works well for most periods. We keep ours in the shower to keep things tidy.
Plastic Medicine Cabinet Organizers – Really like these to use in the medicine cabinet for smaller items that get thrown around everywhere. This is a 2-pack but only used one. Keeps things organized even when on a bumpy road!
Plastic Medicine Cabinet Organizer (set of 3) – These are great for handling larger items – toothbrushes, toothpaste, larger vitamin bottles, etc. This is a 3-pack but used 2 here.
Necklace Organizer – Yeah I know it’s for keys but why not re-purpose for necklaces? It keeps your necklaces tidy (throw a hair band over all 4 hooks to keep them from bouncing). And it adds a little pop of color in the bathroom without redecorating!
Electric Toothbrush Top Holder – We have an electric toothbrush so this works great for our individual tops. Weird though is that if you put them in the way they show above, they will fall out. Bristle forward seems to work better for travel.
TubShroom – Yep, I bought an “As Seen on TV” gadget, but this one is worth your while. Really gets those hairs and keeps the shower drain pretty clean. My hair is ALWAYS everywhere so Gary is quite happy we found this little gem.
HepvO Valve – This thing is a GAME CHANGER (yeah, I know it’s over-used) in our bathroom. Not the easiest thing to install in a truck camper but we’ve reduced nearly all the “aroma” in the bathroom that were coming through the sink drain! We have a full video on this install.
Hand Towel Bar – I honestly am surprised at how long this has held up – we put this in back in 2018 and it’s still going strong!
Midea Dehumidifier – We were looking for a dehumidifer that would be big enough to make a difference and small enough not take up so much space that you feel you’re moving it EVERY. SINGLE. MINUTE. This is a great compromise. When it’s working it’s large, but when you’re ready to stow it, it’s like nesting dolls – pretty sweet. And BOY does it suck out humidity. Really happy with this unit so far!
Shower Bar – Yes, I bought this on Etsy and it is fanTASTIC and now they’re selling on Amazon too! I don’t have to keep moving my bottles of shampoo! I’ve had both of these on for about a year now and they’re working fabulously. It’s the little things when you’re on the road for awhile – anything to make setup and tear-down easier makes you just a little happier!
Oxygenics Shower Head – We’ve had this shower head since 2019 and it still is going strong. It’s a great way to enjoy a shower while reducing the amount of water you’re using. When you’re taking military showers, being able to have a handheld wand to get to all areas quickly is a necessity!
Maxx Air Fans (7500K) – We replaced the OEM fan in the kitchen (was a Fantastic Vent fan) and the bathroom fan (some cheesy 12V noisy fan). These have a lot more options for speed so you can choose to balance the noise, battery load, and airflow to your liking. I also like the fact that we can leave these open when it’s raining outside due to the nice cover. We did have some electronic issues with our kitchen fan and (shockingly) we have a video for that!
Faucet Water Restrictors – Aerators – I didn’t mention these, but we were looking for all ways to reduce water consumption. These have worked well to reduce the amount of water we use for dishes and hand washing. We bought these from Conservation Warehouse. I bought 3 aerators originally – 2 for the kitchen and 1 for the bathroom to check to see what I liked.
- 1 gal/min aerator for kitchen sink
- 0.5 gal/min aerator for kitchen sink
- 1 gal/min for bathroom sink – but we did replace this with a different faucet so check sizes before purchasing!
STUFF WE’VE TOSSED (OR GIFTED, OR DONATED)
Battery-Operated Candles (dead) – I have these in every category since these offer a nice ambient light and are great in the bathroom for those later visits. No need to turn on the big light (they only last 6 hours after the time you set, though so won’t last the entire night). Update Nov 2022 – ended up breaking several of these over the past year with travels. Not shockingly. Did re-purpose the candle wax for fire starters. I haven’t re-purchased these yet but am honesty missing them now that it’s winter again. Might have to break down and buy another set.
(Tossed) Plastic Foam Dispenser – Nice-looking alternate to disposable foam dispensers. It’s plastic but looks nice. Update: after about 6 months the lever started sticking which was a bummer. We tossed this and went back to full-soap disposable containers since we don’t have room for a big refill bottle. 😕
Battery Operated Cabinet Lights (Tossed) – We use two of these in the medicine cabinet. Works great for grabbing stuff in there without having to wire power into the cabinet. Also works well to open one of the doors if the candle has gone out as a smaller amount of light at 3am. These are USB-chargeable and are magnetic so easy to do. Aug ’22 – we updated to some rope lighting that was hardwired with switches.
