*Spoiler Alert*
The quick answer is “kind of”.
The Host Cascade was one of the first (I think the first) to include recliners in a truck camper, which is great. The challenge is that the recliner in the camper was custom-designed to address some of the dimensional challenges.
We purchased the Rec Pro Charles 58″ Electric RV Loveseat in Coffee Bean (Barisa Fabric). As far as our investigations go, this was the smallest option available that would have the best chance of fitting. That being said, it still does not fit.
However, with some modifications and limitations, we were able to get it to work in our rig.
21″ Door Frame size
The door on the Host Cascade is just over 21″ which places some severe limitations on your options. Lippert’s documentation confirms all of their furniture can fit in a 26″ door but that’s a far cry from 21″. We decided it wasn’t worth the shipping/returning risk.
As mentioned in the video, RecPro confirms their furniture can fit in a 22″ doorway. We can confirm for at least the above 58″ loveseat, it fit through the 21″ doorway.
Couch Length
The next problem is the length of the couch. The couch must be short enough so that we can close the dinette/bathroom driver slide without causing direct contact.
This was was a bit of a gamble for us. The Host Cascade couch was 64″ but Host worked with Lippert (who makes the Cascade recliner) to incorporate a gap at the bottom of the recliner that allowed the dinette slide to literally slide underneath it.
Based upon our measurements, it *seemed* like 58″ would work, but we really needed to try it.
Couch Width
This was the kicker, and where I made a big mistake. The dimensions from the wall (with the mirror above) to the kitchen slideout is 35 3/4″ on our rig. Trying to find a recliner that will fit in that width was impossible from our investigations.
So, we decided that we could possibly sacrifice full recline extension and allow us to push the recliners a little further back. We would likely sacrifice an inch or so which would likely allow us to recline at about 75% of full extension. Not too bad.
But, I stupidly was focusing on the 36 1/4″ dimension instead of the 39 1/4″. With the 36 1/4″, we should be able to accommodate by reducing the amount of space from the wall. With an actual dimension of 39 1/4″, not so much.
Did it Fit?
Nope.
Ok, let me be a bit more specific.
- Yes, we were able to fit it through the door (and remove the old recliner using the door- whew!)
- Yes, the length of the couch fit so that we
- No, the width did not fit
Kinda sucked, but if I would’ve looked better at the numbers, that would have been obvious. But that’s where we were.
Modifications
Well, after trying this recliner out for just a little while, it was pretty obvious that we wanted to try every option to keep this thing – it was so comfortable!
So, our main issue was the inability to close the kitchen slideout due to the width. As Gary looked further, we looked at options to cut down some of the slideout opening that would impact the chairs. A little sketch, I know.
Based upon removal, it was pretty obvious the bottom added metal piece wasn’t doing much of anything. The metal bracing across the vertical portion of the slideout was there to help with a clean and aligned closure, so we wanted to minimize the impact.
We ended up removing the lower extra piece of metal at the bottom and reupholstering the fake leather side to give us an extra few inches to allow the couch to clear. This in addition to limiting the recline position allowed us to keep this recliner!
Once removing that metal piece, we had a limited amount of protection from the outside elements beyond the rubber slide gasket. Gary then created a mating piece that would both help insulate that section better and also create a space between the recliner and the wall where we can store larger items such as our reflectix window frames and our computer lap tables.
Funny side note… we took a remnant of the carpet in the camper and went to our local Menards. We were able to make this from a few of the free swatch samples available! 🙂
About the RecPro Recliner
We’ve currently been using it for over 4 months now (yeah, it took me forever to finally get back to this video!). It has been a great addition to our rig and has been invaluable in those pouring rain days where you’re just stuck inside for awhile.
Even though we have limited reclining, it’s more than enough for both of us. For me personally, I really like the backrest padding. With the ability to modify how high my feet are up, I have a much better opportunity to get comfortable. We purchased the middle removable armrest and we use it often – we tend to keep our Roku and fireplace remotes in there when we are settled at a site.
The cupholders have blue LEDs which I originally thought were cheesy but they can be nice if you just need a bit of light rather than turning on an overhead light. We also use the USB ports periodically for our tablet and every once in awhile when our phones are dying earlier in the day.
