We enjoyed a beautiful weekend at Chimney Rock BLM Campground right next to the Crooked River then we head into the RV shop for some long-needed work on our camper. So while we’re waiting, let’s get painting!
Here are the items we used for this project. The primer and paint was purchased at Home Depot.
Simple Green Cleaner – As part of the prep, I chose to use Simple Green cleaner instead of TSP. Harsh chemicals in a camper didn’t seem like the best idea. And the point was to degrease, which I think this did pretty well (as far as we could tell). We use this for our general cleaner so we didn’t have to buy something extra.
FrogTape – In hindsight, I wish I had not used this. I put around several areas and ended up spending more time putting this stuff and trying to peel it off than it was worth. But depending on your painting techniques, this might be something to try.
My biggest problem was the black gasket around the bathroom cabinet. I still got stuff on there, but I think trying to put tape made it worse. Again, YMMV.
PPG Seal Grip Primer – We needed to make sure we had a primer that would adhere to the wallpaper on our RV walls. There were several reviews of this paint – some great, some not so great. Since we weren’t able to get our hands on any other alternate, I decided to give this a try. Although it’s still early, so far I’m happy with the coverage and grip. We did 2 coats of this before applying paint.
We ended up using about 3/4 of a gallon to do our entire inside rig.
For now, this is the only thing that we have on our slide out ceilings. I’ll probably eventually paint it with an eggshell paint later, but didn’t bother right now. Maybe I’ll just leave it… ๐
Behr Ultra Scuff Defense Primer & Paint – Even though we we used 2 coats of the above primer, I still decided to use a paint and primer combo. We chose eggshell to help reduce the amount of visible stuff all on the walls. I think it was a good choice so far.
I did use 2 coats of this paint as well.
We originally bought a color that didn’t work for us, so we ended up with more paint than needed. Will be trying to donate that to a Restore shop once I can find one.
We ended up using the color Breezeway since that was a good compromise with my desire to have things more gray and Gary’s desire to have more green color in the camper. It does add a more calming feel and looks great with the brown furniture we have.
I think it will also look great when I get to our next painting project to paint the cabinets, but that’s a project probably another 5-6 months away…
We used small rollers since the standard size would be entirely useless in the RV. I also bought a 1 1/2″ angled brush for the edges and hard-to-reach spots. The biggest challenge seemed to be where to put all of our crap when doing a room. It felt like a mess for awhile. We painted the living room/dining room and bathroom the first weekend. We finished up the following weekend by doing the bedroom and the kitchen ceiling (which I had forgotten). I do like having the white ceilings on the slideouts – it does make it brighter.
All-in-all, I’m thrilled I was able to get this done while we were waiting to get our camper worked on her at Penpac RV. And I keep the paint mess to a minimum, which Gary was a bit surprised. See, I can learn new tricks!
Our Camping Locationsโบ๐บ๏ธ๐
We’re sharing our camping and other locations on iOverlander (boondocking, etc.) and Campendium (established campsites).
โ Chimney Rock BLM Campground – Campground is geared towards tent camping, but you can park your RV in the parking spaces near the campsite. Beautiful site right next to the Crooked River. Perfect for fly fishing. We saw several SUPs on the river as well. $8/night was pretty good for having trash and a nice site.
โ Penpac RV – not the typical place to stay overnight, but it’s saving us a TON of money. I started looking at long-term hotels and Air BnBs in the area and we’d be paying well into the thousands for the amount of time we’re likely to spend here. Not the prettiest of places, but the price is right! And hopefully we’ll get started on the camper shortly!
Our Journey Mapโบ๐ฅพ๐บ๏ธ๐
We also have a currently free map on Google with all of the places we’ve stayed along with the related video and links to more detailed reviews on iOverlander , Campendium and Google Maps.
