After our first hike at Yellowstone, we were hooked – this place is freakin’ stunning. Our goal, though, was to find out whether we could go on a popular hike and not be surrounded by people. Check out our video to see how we fared!
Where We Stayed⛺🗺️📌
We’re sharing our camping and other locations on iOverlander (boondocking, etc.) and Campendium (established campsites).
Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park – (Link to Campendium)
We were honestly really limited by where we could stay. I’m *guessing* we may have got in due to a cancellation, but I don’t know that for sure.
The park itself was well-maintained, the check-in was quick and easy and we were grateful to be able to use their laundry facility (which was also clean and working!). They have a small store at the main office where you check in for small items as well which was nice to have.
You are walking distance from the main town which was great on those days you get back late and don’t want to cook!
The only issue we had was that the no hookup site (in the “cub loop”)was not really meant for a 25′ truck camper. We originally wanted to “unturtle” or take the camper off and only drive the truck into the park. The site we ended up with says it can handle campers 25′ and less but if we took the camper off, our nose would have been in the street! We made due by just leaving the camper on (which allows us to back up more) and then took the diesel hit by hauling it around for several days. We also had to maneuver around the larger trees in the area. Probably not a big deal for most folks beyond us tall truck campers.
So, if you have a truck camper and want to remove it during your stay, you’ll have to get an electric or full hook-up site. We paid $90 for the electric site and $60 for the no-hookup site.
Even with this caveat, we’d be happy to stay at this park again.
Where We Hiked 🥾🗺️📌
Fairy Creek Trail to Imperial Geyser(Link to AllTrails)
We parked at the Fairy Creek Trailhead – I’d definitely suggest getting there early. While the parking lot has expanded (Google Maps doesn’t show the now larger parking lot just south of the “circle” parking area), it still gets crazy busy between 10am-12pm.
If you’re in a hurry, you still might want to stop here to at least see the Grand Prismatic spring. The overlook on this hike will take you up a little ways to get a better top-down view. We chose to do this instead of walking on the boardwalk. We also chose to view the spring after hiking up to the falls and Imperial geyser since the steam and surrounding fog was quite heavy that morning (and is probably typical especially in the fall).
The first part of the trail was just ok. Nothing truly exciting beyond the bridge you walk over (which was quite picturesque). Fairy Creek Falls was pretty and it was cool to watch the river coming off the fall.
You lose a lot of people after the Grand Prismatic Overlook, then lose most of the rest of the folks at Fairy Falls. We had the Imperial Geyser nearly all to ourselves that day. I guess that contrasted nicely with the plethora of people at the Grand Prismatic overlook on the hike back!
Upper Falls, Lower Falls and Crystal Falls Trail (Link to AllTrails)
This was quite a beautiful hike. It has a large parking lot with spaces for RVs. You don’t have to walk far to get the full view of the falls (gorgeous!) and then can continue walking to see more of the gorge area. This was absolutely stunning early in the morning as the sun rose. I would highly recommending going early.
We unfortunately didn’t finish this trail since Gary wasn’t feeling well, but would still recommend based upon what we saw.
Where We Ate 🍽️🌮🍕
Wild West Pizzeria & Saloon (Link to Google Maps)
In typical fashion, we generally ate at home, but Gary couldn’t pass up pizza! I’m honestly surprised we didn’t take any pictures, but sometimes that happens. This place was hopping the night we went. Great pizza, good beverages and fun music that I thoroughly enjoyed. So glad we stopped!
