In this episode, we prepare and trek from San Diego’s city lights to the starry skies in the Southern California high desert, but not without a few mishaps. See what mess we get ourselves into when visiting the Pinnacles!
Where We Stayed⛺🗺️📌
San Diego Metro KOA Resort (Chula Vista, CA)
This is a great RV campground if you’re planning on heading into downtown San Diego. Public transportation is nearby and you can be there in about 30 minutes or so. As expected, it’s a family-friendly resort, the sites were reasonable in size, the pool and hot tubs were quite nice as well. And expect to pay prices since you’re close to a big city.
Oceanside RV Resort (Oceanside, CA) – Thousand Trails
Another recently remodeled RV resort (some things still in-progress). Smaller size sites, but they do have fences separating which helps. We stayed on the side near the storm drain, which was kind of nice – lots of birds and ducks to watch.
They do have a nice pool, and you can get Amazon packages very quickly here (why we came). But be aware that there is a busy train line right next to the resort. Get some ear plugs or a white noise generator and you should be fine.
You’re like 2 blocks from the Ocean AND you can take public transportation easily into San Diego. You can also use the gO’side shuttle program within town – just $3 for a trip (within a certain range). Download the “Ride Circuit” app on your phone. It works like Uber but a ton cheaper.
Trona Pinnacles (Trona, CA)
As we mention in the video, there’s about a 6 mile washboard-ey, rutted road out to the Pinnacles. That wasn’t bad but be aware you’re not going to be traveling very fast. Once out at the Pinnacles, you have a lot of options for camping, but a lot may take you up and down some pretty steep roads.
We had a bit more challenge since our rig is pretty tall, so variations in side-to-side movement can get pretty sketchy. Taking it slow and looking before driving helps a lot.
