About Cloudland Canyon State Park
We were on our way back to Illinois and we were lucky (even in March!) to get a site at Cloudland Canyon State Park in Georgia. That may have been partly due to some closings of portions of the park for renovations. Based upon the people there during the weekday, I’m thinking this place is hopping during most of the year!
We were unable to stay a week as previously hoping since the weekends were booked SOLID. Guess this is something we’ll have to deal with as we get closer to summer…
This park seems pretty large! The drive from the check-in station to the West Rim Campground was windy and quite fun! The park also has several yurts as well as cottages if you wanted to visit without your RV or tent. For those more adventurous, they also have several backcountry sites too.
Since we were coming from Sloppy Floyd State Park, we only had a 1-hour drive๐ so we ended up getting to the park pretty early in the afternoon. We only had a few days at the park (since we were unable to snag a site for the weekend), I suggested to hit what I originally thought was an easy trail but must’ve got mixed up in the translation!
West Rim Loop Trail
If you are staying at the park and are planning on hiking, be aware that there is a bit of walking to do between the campground and the actual trail. Luckily, the trails are quite pretty alone. Because of this we used the Gaia GPS app to help estimate our longer trails so we wouldn’t have a hike that was beyond our ability.
But for this trail, we didn’t have enough time for mapping since we wanted to get a few hours of hiking in before sunset. So, off we went!
This trail was a TON of fun! Gary said it was like a kid’s playground, and he was right! You have a ton of opportunities to do some light scrambling up and down rocks, and the views are amazing! Definitely worth the time
Bear Creek Backcountry Trail
Since we only had a few days, we chose to try the Bear Creek Backcountry trail. It was certainly more than we bargained for! You’ll have to watch the video for more details!
Our Camping Locations
If you’re interested in seeing all of the places we’ve stayed in 2022, I’m keeping a (mostly) updated list on Google Maps by Month. Enjoy!
