Ah, the kitchen. Our Host Cascade, in my opinion, does a pretty decent job of providing enough countertop and cabinet space in the kitchen for a truck camper. But it *IS* a truck camper, so having the right gear does help make things easier.
I put together a video of a lot of our organization tools, and kitchen gear was first on the list. One thing that’s different in our list – I am showing items I both use as well as letting you know items I’ve tossed!
The below links are mostly Amazon Affiliate links to products I’ve purchased and am using in our truck camper. Feel free to peruse – hopefully some of these items will make sense for your rig (or future rig) as well!
Refrigerator Bins – With the new 12V compressor refrigerator, I wanted to have a way to organize each of the shelves to see what I have as well as making my life easier by being able to pull out a bin for common things, like making lunch sandwiches. These worked perfectly! I *think* these would also work in the Norcold 12V refrigerator as well (I could only have one of these with the absorption refrigerator).
Aeropress – Previously I made coffee with our percolator for 18 months on the road until I got this little guy. With Gary no longer wanting a morning coffee, I had the opportunity to try something different, and so glad I did!
This compact french press is perfect to take pretty much anywhere! I bought it originally for future multi-day backpacking trips but I now use it daily.
It has a different (better, I think) flavor than percolated coffee and it’s so easy to clean up as well.
Kitchen Basket – I just got this recently and it’s really helping to reduce the clutter in my kitchen. Now, it’s not a miracle worker, but it does a great job of handling 5 lbs of potatoes, multiple loaves of bread, fruits, onions, garlic, peppers, etc. So not too shabby!
HepvO Valve – If you’re having some “fermentation” smells in your kitchen sink, this may be a good option for you. We installed this after dealing with both smells from the sink as well as a lot of excess moisture when we would put the cutting board topper over the sink. This was an easier install than the one we did in the bathroom, but you do need to get some extra parts. Check out this link of our installation for more details!
8 oz Plastic Ball Freezer Jars (3) These use the same lids for the 16oz version and are stackable which works great in a small freezer
16 oz Plastic Ball Freezer Jars (2). Same lids as the 8oz and are great for freezer leftovers as well as small bowls.
Metal Bins (set of 2) – For organizing freezer (only 1 can be used). I keep all my frozen meats in re-useable bags and stored vertically in here. I call it my “meat flower”, ha!
Compact Grater/Slicer/Dish – Much more compact and the lid can be used as a bowl for capturing the veggies/cheese/etc.
Bag & Wrap Organizer – I mounted this under the sink on the door. Not as easy as I thought – see the video above to show how I mounted it!
Pizza Pans (set of 2) – these fit well in convection microwave and we also use them when baking pizza on our Blackstone grill (see this video how we did that!)
Crockpot / Air Fryer / Pressure Cooker – my fave and cheaper than Instantpot. But… it does use all of the Instantpot accessories which is quite nice.
Mesh Produce Bags (set of 3) – Great breathable bags for potatoes, onions, etc. We hang produce on the lower pantry door handles
Portable Scale – Small, thin scale. Helps when I’m attempting to diet and measuring stuff.
Rubbermaid Plastic Sealable Containers (set of 2) – Perfect for produce that needs protection (lettuce, spinach, etc.)
Plastic Scrapers (set of 5) – Great to get off baked-on gooey-ness from pans and plates and spoons and whatever you can make a mess out of!
Quarter-sheet pans (set of 2) – These are great for making no-bake bars. Won’t fit in microwave but these are perfect for prepping food to take outdoors. The very old ones I have don’t have as high of a side on as these, but that would be more ideal!
Silicone Measuring Cup – A must-have for an immersion blender, which I use for protein shakes instead of my old huge blender or making hummus (such a mess but really great if I have tahini!)
Plastic Organizer Bins – These work great on the thinner portions of the kitchen cabinets in our Host Cascade. Check for dimensions, but I have 3 of these for that shelf – helps keep things from falling during travel days.
Under-the-shelf spice rack – This is a great spice rack option under one of the shorter but taller shelves in the Host Cascade pantry. Perfect for that person who has a spice problem! ๐
Grease Splatter Cover – Good for (obviously) managing grease splatters but can also be used to strain pasta – then have one less thing in your kitchen!
Sink Strainers (set of 2) – These do keep a lot of food bits from getting into your gray tank.
FoodSaver Mini Vacuum – LOVE this to keep meat from freezer burns in the freezer. Nice and small. And reusable bags!
Foodsaver Reusable Gallon bags – I tried other 2 other types of re-useable bags on Amazon but have been the most happy with the Foodsaver bags. I will say that I use mainly the quart bags, though.
Foodsaver Reuseable Quart bags – These are the bags I tend to use these the most – they have the right size for meals for the two of us – 1-2 chicken breasts, ground beef, etc.
Oil Spray Bottle – This works great to season our Blackstone grill or just lightly coat pans. Actually works unlike other bottles
Stovetop Percolator – Yeah, we use a stovetop percolator and we like it. Yes, we could have had electric but we bought this before we went full-time. And there’s not much to break (except the glass top!)
Edit (4/15/2023): I’m still keeping the percolator but are using our Aeropress for daily use. This would be great when I need to make a larger amount of coffee (like when we go out fishing).
Temp/Humidity Monitor – I bought one for the freezer and one for the refrigerator. Great to have a loud obnoxious alarm go off it the temps get above your set limit. Just don’t stick it in the drip tray and drown it… ๐
Alpicool Dual Zone Refrigerator-Freezer – We’ve had some challenges with our Dometic regular absorption refrigerator. This was an inexpensive alternate to the Dometic 95DZ that I was eyeing, and I think we chose wisely. When not in use, it’s in our truck backseat but thinking of eventually adding an outlet on the camper outside so we could keep it in one of our “flank sides” on the truck bed.
Zep Window Cleaner – We learned about this when we were reglazing our windows at our old home. This is *GREAT* to clean the countertops, especially the stovetop & glass. Works great on the microwave and YES, use this on your truck & camper windows. I’d probably buy locally rather than lugging 2 bottles around, though….
Black Dry Erase Board – I have this added to the freezer on our refrigerator, but it’s not the full length. In hindsight, I’d rather purchase something that can be cut to that size. But for now it works for us!
Black board “liquid chalk” – I think I like the board just so I can write in cool colors. ๐ Also makes “to do” lists fun when you get to erase them. We also try to put the week’s dinner plans on there as well (which we even stick to…. sometimes….)
Shelf Liner (for pots & pans) – Stacking your pots and pans? This is the thick material I used in between the stackable pans above – I didn’t want to scratch off the non-stick coating prematurely. This also has antimicrobial protection and can be WASHED! I cut these into a star-like pattern so they contoured the pans better.
Stackable Pots & Pans Set – We’ve only had these since Jan 2022, but really liking them so far. Yep, I got rid of my cast iron and other pans and went with this. These GREATLY reduced the space needed in that big kitchen drawer! See below for the liner I used to keep the pans from scratching. Removeable handles are awesome for tighter storage spaces.
Garbage Can Slide – This was a thing of beauty once installed. I could actually get my garbage can out from the drawer without sounding like a sailor. I will say that I was still sailor-esque while installing but a happy camper after! These were 16″ with 100 lb capacity.
Kitchen Drawer Slide – I’m not sure why it took me so long to replace this one. I did beef up the big kitchen drawer we have (since we didn’t get the oven) – you can see what I did in this video – which helped a TON but it was still hard to get the drawer in and out. Not any longer! These were 24″ long with 150 lb capacity.
Gary did have to file down the lock plate to get it to lock properly – the slides we chose were slightly larger which moved the drawer up EVER so slightly!
Acuva ArrowMAX2.0 – After a year of full-time travel, we wanted a better solution than our Brita water filter for drinking water. This definitely fits the bill! The water is slower than your regular kitchen spigot but SO MUCH faster than our Brita filter. So glad we did this – and the water tastes remarkably better. Note: this will make your water pump pulse a bit due to the restriction of the water to purify. If you ended up with a greater than 3.5 gal/min pump, it doesn’t work great (spits water while pumping). Here’s the video for the Acuva system installation.
Omnia Oven (was in our slideout tray) – I’m honestly still not convinced whether this is a good purchase or not. It seems like it takes a lot longer to cook items in here than generally in a pan but I bought it mainly for baking breads. I was SO worried about not having an oven! But we’ve been on electric more often than not and just use our convection microwave oven. I still am keeping this since our plan is to do a lot more off-grid camping and maybe I’ll find it more useful then…. time will tell.
Update: I’m SOOO glad we didn’t get rid of this one. Now that we’ve been boondocking, I’ve been using this often to bake potatoes, roast veggies and bake rolls. We also have the silicone insert but this makes me question whether we want to keep our microwave/convection oven any more!
Paper Towel Holder – I do really like this one. We leave it on the kitchen counter and do NOT move it while driving. The rubber grip on the bottom has kept it in place even on rough roads. I also prefer to keep it mobile instead of having one mounted in the kitchen. This allows me to easily take it outside when we’re having a meal outside!
Ninja Personal Blender – I had a larger Ninja with all the gadgets in my sticks and bricks but had to give it away since it would probably have taken up half of my only large kitchen drawer in our camper. But this little one is now my friend instead! It came with 2 cups and I use it for smoothies as well as for grinding my coffee beans! And I can fit a few more things in that drawer too! ๐
Silverware Basket – This one is pretty close to the one we have (but ours is red) that I stole from my mom! Anything to make eating outdoors is a good thing, and keeping silverware and napkins in the cabinet for regular use and then being able to quickly grab it and go outside is pretty awesome.
Cabinet Lighting & Switches- I haven’t done a video on this (yet) but these are the switches and rope lights I used to brighten up my kitchen, living room, and bathroom cabinets. Bedroom cabinets will come eventually!
Door Handle / Grab Bar – A simple way to open and close the screen door without having to do the door handle slide dance. It also works when the door is attached to the screen door (but you need a bit more force to close). This was one of the first things we installed after getting the camper and we now (after beginning our travels full-time) use it every day!
Faucet Water Restrictors – Aerators – I didn’t mention these, but we were looking for all ways to reduce water consumption. These have worked well to reduce the amount of water we use for dishes and hand washing. We bought these from Conservation Warehouse. I bought 3 aerators originally – 2 for the kitchen and 1 for the bathroom to check to see what I liked.
- 1 gal/min aerator for kitchen sink
- 0.5 gal/min aerator for kitchen sink
- 1 gal/min for bathroom sink – but we did replace this with a different faucet so check sizes before purchasing!
Silicone Baking Cups – Great by themselves for quick snacks of nuts. You can also use this in an omnia oven for baking cupcakes. I haven’t used these in our convection oven yet, but could if I place these on top of the pizza pan.
Ended up using these to make cornbread muffins in the Omnia oven – woo hoo!
STUFF WE’VE TOSSED (OR GIFTED, OR DONATED)
(Tossed) Battery Operated Candles – we have them in the bathroom, on the fireplace, and by the sink. Great for that night-time glass of water – no additional light need. Update: the water around the sink got to this sucker so had to toss it. But kept the candle wax for making fire starters some time!
I do miss the home-iness of the candle light…. I may eventually break down and buy a few of these again!
(Tossed) Brita Water Filter – With the Dual filters outside and filtering our drinking water inside with this, I think we’re in pretty decent shape! We did start purchasing the longer-lasting filter replacements. Update (Apr’22): after using for 12 months and going through both the standard and longer-lasting filters about every 4-6 weeks, we decided to get a more permanent system. The time to filter a container of water would take from 2-15 minutes depending on the age of the filter. Too much time to wait for water to make coffee! See our Acuva system!
Brita Water Filter Replacements – These were supposed to last a lot longer than the white filters. I thought that was good – less plastic to throw away. Well, these were a lot more expensive and not really any better (at least when we were using them). I went back to the white filters (and then replaced with the Acuva system.
Coffee/Spice Grinder (tossed) – I love this thing. I definitely use when I have whole bean coffee (which isn’t as often as I’d like) but also use it for grinding nuts and flaxseed when I make pancakes! Oct ’22 – While this worked quite well, I really wanted a blender. So I ended up buying a Ninja Personal blender and had to toss this to free up space.
USB Re-chargeable Closet / Pantry Lights (set of 3) – I use 1 of these in the storage area above the sink. They work well but will need to charge regularly. Not awful, since they are USB chargeable. Turns on with movement and goes off in 10 or 15 seconds.
Aug2022 Update: While I’m still using these in our bedroom closet, I’m slowly switching out to LED strips. The above lights do work well but in areas you go in often, they may not stay charged as long as you want.
Mr. Beams Motion Light (Repurposed) – I had used these in my house before and these are BRIGHT and seem to last forever. Great option for light under the kitchen cabinet. Aug ’22 Update – I upgraded our under-cabinet lighting to an LED strip (see below) and ended up re-purposing this for our steps as we walk into the camper. It turns off with movement, is bright, and turns off shortly after. Perfect place!
(Tossed) Foam pump – great for bathroom or kitchen. This is also plastic but looks like glass. Nicer to use instead of constantly throwing away new plastic containers. Update: We have gone back to full-soap in the kitchen with a small spritzer instead of this foaming soap – think its ultimately using less. We just used this for our hands (not dishes).
